Is It Too Late to See the Golden Aspen Leaves in Colorado?

Updated: Oct 2

If you’re wondering whether you’ve missed the golden spectacle of the golden aspen leaves in Colorado, the answer depends on where you plan to go. Colorado’s fall foliage season is fleeting but stunning, and the timing varies by elevation and weather conditions. According to the 2024 Fall Foliage Forecast, the peak aspen viewing season started in mid-September at higher elevations but will continue into early October in many areas across the state.

When Does the Magic Happen?

Typically, Colorado’s aspen trees begin to turn gold in mid-September, starting at higher elevations above 8,000 feet. Lower elevations in the foothills will experience their peak colors in late September through early October. With cooler nights and shorter days, the vibrant colors are triggered, creating breathtaking scenes before the leaves fall.

In 2024, weather patterns have followed a somewhat typical trajectory, but it’s important to note that unseasonable warmth or early cold snaps can either delay or accelerate the foliage timeline.

Great Spots to See Fall Colors

If you’re ready to make the most of the remaining days of aspen season, here are a few beautiful and accessible spots in the Denver/Boulder foothills and surrounding areas where you can still catch the shimmering gold.

Guanella Pass

1. Guanella Pass

This scenic drive, located near Georgetown, offers sweeping views of golden aspens and high-alpine scenery. The pass peaks at over 11,000 feet, so early October could still offer vibrant views, especially along the winding road.

2. Golden Gate Canyon State Park

Only an hour’s drive from Denver, this state park is a local favorite for fall hikes. The moderate elevation and mix of aspen groves and ponderosa pine forests create a diverse autumn landscape. Aspens here tend to peak in late September but linger through early October.

3. Rollinsville

Nestled along the Peak to Peak Highway, Rollinsville offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains painted in gold. Its higher elevation makes it a prime spot for catching late-season foliage, with great hikes or scenic drives leading to colorful vistas.

4. Blackhawk

Known for its historic mining town charm and casinos, Blackhawk is also a great spot to witness fall colors. Surrounded by golden aspens, the area’s moderate elevation means that early October is still a great time for a visit.

Is It Too Late?

It’s not too late if you’re planning to explore lower elevations like the foothills and local parks. The next week or so is your best window to soak in the final golden hues before winter sets in. Keep an eye on local weather, as a significant cold front could strip the leaves quickly, turning the landscape from gold to bare.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re hiking, taking a scenic drive, or simply enjoying a moment outdoors, Colorado’s golden aspens are a fall treat. Even if you’re catching the last glimpses of this season’s beauty, it’s well worth a trip to these stunning spots. Happy leaf-peeping!
